xTool P3 Setup Guide: First-Run Mistakes to Avoid

The xTool P3 is not a machine I would treat like a plug-in-and-go desktop engraver. In my first-run walkthrough, the important work happens before the first design: remove the transport hardware, fill the coolant correctly, decide how you are handling air filtration, and run the optical-path check in xTool Studio. Once those steps were out of the way, I moved into first jobs on acrylic, slate, and 8 mm bamboo. This guide follows that actual order so you can avoid turning a simple setup miss into a bad first impression.

This is the setup and initial-results part of my P3 coverage. It is not a long-term review, and it does not cover the future rotary or 5 W IR-laser tests mentioned in the video.

Do not power the P3 on before the coolant is filled. In this walkthrough, I use the required coolant mix with distilled water—not filtered water—and treat that as a first-run prerequisite rather than an optional maintenance task.

The setup order shown in the video

1. Remove packaging and all four transport brackets

The first physical task in the video is not software. I checked for leftover packing material and removed the four transport / gantry brackets. That detail is easy to miss because the P3 is large and enclosed, but a machine can look ready while a shipping restraint is still doing exactly what it was designed to do: stop a moving assembly from moving.

My practical rule is to keep the removed hardware together until the first setup is complete. That gives you a clear answer if you later wonder whether every restraint came out, and it is useful if the machine ever needs to be transported again.

2. Fill the coolant before you power on

The coolant step is the one I would put at the top of a P3 setup checklist. I mixed antifreeze with distilled water, not filtered water, then filled the system before moving on. The distinction matters because filtered water is not automatically distilled water; use the fluid and mixing instructions that apply to your machine rather than substituting what happens to be on hand.

This is also where you should slow down instead of rushing toward the first cut. Fill the coolant completely, look over the connections, and follow xTool's current documentation for the required mix and any safety notes. The video demonstrates the setup flow; the product documentation is the authority if the supplied instructions differ or have changed.

Treat coolant as a required setup system, not an accessory. If you are unsure about the mix, the fill point, or a connection, stop and verify it before powering the laser on.

3. Set up air filtration as part of the machine, not an afterthought

I then connected the air-filtration equipment and walked through the difference between the stock fan, the AP2, and the AP2 Max. The exact hardware you need depends on where you are operating the machine and how you are venting it, but the workflow point is broader: make the air plan before your first job, not after a material has already filled the room with smoke or odor.

For the AP2 Max portion, I also covered Bluetooth, firmware, and a first test grid. That makes the accessory setup part of the same commissioning process as the machine rather than a separate project you postpone indefinitely.

4. Run the optical-path test in xTool Studio

Before the first real material jobs, I ran the optical-path test in xTool Studio. This is a good example of a first-run task that can feel skippable when you are eager to engrave something, but it gives you a baseline before you start troubleshooting a weak mark or inconsistent cut later.

I would keep the result of that first check with your machine notes. If you change something in the optical system or later suspect a performance issue, knowing that the machine passed its initial check gives you a more useful comparison point than memory alone.

5. Use varied first jobs to learn the workflow

The first results in the video include acrylic, slate, a logo job, and an 8 mm bamboo cut. That is a more useful first-run mix than repeating the same easy engraving several times: it lets you see the workflow on an engrave-only material, a different surface, a graphic job, and a thicker cutting task.

I would not copy settings blindly from one material to another. Material composition, thickness, finish, focus, ventilation, and the specific job all change the result. Start with a documented test, label the sample, and record the settings that produced it.
