The Ugee FunBox is a kid-focused 3D printer that did what it needed to do in this first week of family use: it was quick to set up, easy for an 11-year-old to use through the app, quiet on the desk, and produced successful toy and figurine prints. The important qualifier is supervision. It is marketed for ages 4–12, but it still has a hot end, filament cutters, and a loading step that a younger child may need help with. Quick verdict after a week

For a family looking for a less intimidating way to introduce a child to 3D printing, the FunBox is a compelling first experience. Rob’s daughter selected models, used the app, completed the AI photo-to-figure process, and started prints with little help once the printer was set up. The small build plate is a real limitation if you expect larger projects, but it suits the toys, figurines, and fidget prints shown here—and the compact printer does not take up much desk space. The review is a first-week verdict, not a long-term reliability report.

The video shows the FunBox itself, a roll of test filament, stickers, a quick-start guide, build plate, filament spool, cutters, and a nozzle adapter. Setup was largely about removing packaging, cutting the internal zip tie, placing the magnetic build plate, attaching the spool arrangement, connecting power, and following the app. The filament cutters are sharp, so they are an adult-supervision item even on a kid-oriented machine.

Setup: from box to first print in under 10 minutes

Rob had the printer set up and ready to print in under 10 minutes. In the app, the connection flow was Add Printer, then holding the red button until a beep so the phone could find the FunBox. The guided process then worked through preparation, Wi-Fi, filament loading, and a first print. The magnetic base plate simply sits in place; Wi-Fi setup is the familiar network-and-password step.

Loading filament is the part to teach once

The app’s load step has the user push filament in while lifting the orange lever. The nozzle warms and finishes the loading process. This was the main real-world hurdle in the review: Rob’s daughter initially fed the filament only until the indicator changed color, without pushing it far enough for the extruder to pick it up. After seeing the process once, this is the kind of task an older child can likely repeat, but it should be an adult-assisted first lesson rather than a guess-and-go step.

Safety and the right level of independence

Ugee positions the FunBox for children ages 4–12. Rob’s testing was with his 11-year-old daughter, near the upper end of that range, so the article should not treat her experience as identical to a preschooler’s. He recommends adult supervision, especially for younger children, because the hot end can cause injury. His practical takeaway was that many children around seven or eight may be able to use the app and start routine prints independently after setup, while four- and five-year-olds may need more help. The right level depends on the individual child.

How the app makes the first projects approachable

The app is the center of the FunBox workflow. A child can browse a project, open it, review its details, and press Print Now. When a project uses multiple build plates, the app breaks those plates out so the user can select the appropriate one. Before sending a print, it asks the user to confirm that the build plate is clear. The first test model in the video was a small dragon egg; the app estimated about three hours and roughly 25 grams of filament for that print.

The review also shows the in-app camera option, which lets the user view what is happening in the printer from the app. That is useful for a parent checking on a print, but it does not replace supervision around the machine.

AI Mini Me: from photo to a printable figure

The FunBox app also includes kid-friendly creation features. Rob did not test the drawing-to-AI option in this video, but his daughter used AI Mini Me. She selected a photo, generated a cartoon version, chose a 3D model, and sent it to the build plate. The workflow offers an optional base; the test print was made without one. She was also able to choose the print quality before sending the job.

The Mini Me result printed successfully, but it also produced the clearest print-quality lesson in the review. The automatic orientation put rough areas on the top of the head where the raft contacted the model. Rob could clean them up, but if he printed it again he would change the orientation and accept supports in the hair rather than the raft contact on the head. That is a useful way to frame a kid printer: the simple app gets a project started, while an adult can still teach why orientation and contact surfaces matter.

First print results and cleanup

The dragon-in-an-egg test came out well, with no adhesion issues. Rob noted that the default approach appears to use rafts for adhesion, so expect some cleanup and pay attention to orientation before confirming a model. Alongside the Mini Me figure, the video shows a fidget toy, an ice-cream-cone fidget, and other small models. Rob was happy with the print speeds—better than he expected for a kid-focused printer—and the prints shown were successful.
